The event showcased a diverse and impressive set of immersive technologies, from a VR simulation that placed attendees into an HVAC troubleshooting scenario to a 360° virtual tour of an HVAC lab developed in-house. Also demonstrated were examples of AR using USC’s interview with a virtual human and Mira’s “Ask An Expert” remote assistance function. Attendees were given the opportunity to try several VR/AR head-mounted displays like HTC’s Vive Pro, the Oculus Rift, Magic Leap’s One, and Mira’s cost-effective headset. In addition, each attendee was given their own foldable VR headset, like Google’s Cardboard, to use for 360° content. The keynote speaker series was also a great success! We can’t thank the speakers enough for agreeing to present on such short notice, so here’s a shoutout to Van Ton-Quinlivan, Jim Caldwell, Darrow Soares, and Ruben Jimenez Jr., who all gave excellent presentations. We’d also like to give a special thanks to Interplay Learning, USC, 3DInternet, and EastsideLED for the amazing LED wall. Overall, the event was a success, but don’t just take our word for it: see what attendees had to say about it here.
Now that the event has passed, the question on all of our minds is, so what does the future look like for the Immersive Learning Lab? Well, we’re in the midst of constructing the lab which will have four immersive learning bays and a common meeting area to be used for various activities (See below). Construction should be completed by mid to late March, where we’ll then host a grand opening for faculty, staff, students, and the community to visit and explore the technologies we have on-site. Further, we are actively seeking opportunities to strengthen our partnerships within the Energy, Construction, and Utilities sector, but also to develop additional partnerships that go beyond the ECU.
If you’re interested in learning more about immersive technologies or would like to partner with us, please feel free to send a message to ILL@appliedlearningscience.com
That’s all for now folks, but more to come in the future!
